COMING ATTRACTIONS : Torera behind the scenes pt 2

sets are about work.
sets are about intensity and stress and time running against you.
sets are about moments piled onto moments,
legs aching,
mind pounding.
but you keep going back,
because sets are mainly about friendships
that bond you strong and fast.
it was parker tolifson and my first time together.
and it was THIS much fun, this easy.
that says a lot.
manacop and connie,
they know me like family now.
kira, jim, and lyle all did drive-bys for support.  and laughter.
i need say nothing about this one.  it's apparent.
and my new leads? they seemed to fit right in:

COMING ATTRACTIONS : Torera behind the scenes

somewhere on melrose place,
behind an elegant storefront,
a crew of newly formed friends
got to work.
there was the designer:
(eduardo lucero, sorting shoes.)
the director:
(practicing pensive.)
the cinematographer:
(no, you may not have parker.  he has a girlfriend.  yes, i checked for you already.)
the producer who was a model :
(la bang.  hard at work.)
the producer who was also a chef :
(tim was swarmed at the grill.)
there were cocktail parties :
and matadors :
and yes, the half naked male model for those of you whom have come to expect such things of me:
and though the fittings were fun :
and the torera was tempestuous :
it was the pomegranate seeds in the salad that threw everyone for a loop :
once again, tim's cookery steals the show!

COMING ATTRACTIONS : Torera, the fitting session

this past weekend,
gearing up for the shoot,
tim and i met connie bang,
our intrepid and dogged producer,
and dragged my father, wayne,
(poor unwitting bystander)
to meet up with
eduardo lucero,
designer divine
at his atelier to review the clothing for the shoot.
but first, lunch at mauro's
that was pretty much dad's expression all day.
a mix of "this is fun" and "what next?"
then, the gowns.
it was a fashion explosion.
(eduardo lucero, above)
eduardo prides himself on cutting for real women,
but i think his variety of inspirations and eye for detail and line
caught me most off guard.
and little did connie know,
but she was about to become a fit model.
ok, it didn't take MUCH convincing . . .
she is an ex-mo-del.
plus, my ribcage wouldn't fit in that damn
tooled leather corset.
yes, those are hand beaded lace panties.  yeah, boy.
eduardo kept putting connie in all these insane hooded dresses. . .
not surprisingly,
connie took to the clothes like a balenciaga gladiator sandal to an olsen.
then again,
what's a girl NOT going to love?
dad, meanwhile,
passively took it all in . . .
and i?
i began dreaming.
of turning lens to these creations . . .

COMING ATTRACTIONS : an explanation

this is going to be a crazy, creative summer.
in addition to "the weapons project",
which i'll talk more about once a few more players are in place,
we're about to film the first of a series of short films
using the eduardo lucero "matador" runway as an initial inspiration.
tim has always been a huge proponent of trying new things,
but even more so of the concept that
the only thing holding you back from doing what you want
is just DOING it.
not in a nike way.
it's actually shocking how much can happen in your life
if you just say to yourself
yes, i can.
yes, i will.
and then . . .
do it.
i'm not being simplistic here,
or even trying to go all oprah on your asses,
it's just something i have to keep reminding myself,
and whether it's the weapons project,
or this first short film,
the only thing holding me back
turns out,
is me.
so here i am,
with the help of my friends and co-workers and partner
starting another major undertaking.
TORERA

(a coming attraction)

this project involves the creation of a trailer
for a film that does not exist.
We will be filming sequences and snippets of an imaginary story,
bit and pieces of dialog and action,
that when strung together will comprise a compelling reason to run to the theatre . . .
even though the film will never be released.

this film is called “Torera”,
and is about the love affair between a woman and a matador.
As we learn from the scenes,
there is much more to the “boy meets girl” scenario,
there are bits of madness, slivers of dreams, and perhaps, perhaps
even murder.

principal filming for the first "coming attraction",
TORERA,
begins this sunday, may 17th.
